19th Annual NCAFPM Fall Floodplain Institute

October 9-11, 2024

The North Carolina Association of Floodplain Managers (NCAFPM) will host our Fall Floodplain Institute on October 9 - 11, 2024 in beautiful Cherokee, North Carolina!  

This Call for Abstracts seeks a broad range of presenters to address the many topics and issues associated with reducing flood damages, making communities more resilient and best managing our floodplain and stormwater systems. In addition to the topics listed below, attendees may be especially interested in presentations that include technical instruction, “how-to’s” and practical examples, tutorials, and technical resources. Depending upon the abstracts that are received, we will attempt to organize the program around “General Sessions” and “Technical Sessions” to give attendees two main options for the type of content they would like to attend. Suggestions are also welcome for plenary speakers and/or plenary topics. 

Suggested topic areas include:

  • Stormwater Management
  • Floodplain Mapping and Modeling
  • Stormwater Mapping and Modeling
  • Community Rating System (CRS)
  • Planning
  • Building Code Enforcement
  • Resiliency
  • Pre-Disaster Mitigation
  • Disaster Recovery
  • Climate Issues
  • Stream Channel/Wetland Restoration
  • GIS, LIDAR, and Other Technologies
  • Grants and Other Funding Sources
  • Public Involvement and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Equity and Social Justice
  • Legal Issues
  • Other Related Topics

Session Format Types:

 Traditional Educational Session
Propose a 20-minute presentation from any of the suggested topic areas. Typically, these sessions combine 3 speakers on common topics with a 5-minute Q&A time for each speaker.

 Deep Dive Session
Propose a 45-minute presentation from any of the suggested topic areas. These sessions are intended to cover in-depth topic and allow more interaction and time for attendees to ask questions and discuss relevant topics.

 Lightning Round Session
Propose a 10-minute presentation from any of the suggested topic areas. These sessions are intended to be lively and informative talks from several presenters in a 90-minute session with 15 minutes for Q&A.  

Abstract Submission: 
If you are interested in presenting a topic, please download and complete the Abstract Submission Form on our Fall Floodplain Institute Website and email to abstracts@ncafpm.org

Abstracts should be submitted prior to  July 16, 2024. Presenters will be notified of acceptance by August 1, 2024. Presenters should be prepared to speak for their entire allotted time.

Presentations should be emailed to ncafpm_it@ncafpm.org or delivered to our registration desk AV person on a flash drive the morning prior to your session.

CONFERENCE INFORMATION

Please note that all presenters and conference attendees must register for the conference. If you do not plan to attend any conference sessions or events, please contact Susan Frady for a "Presenting Only" code. 

We will send an email to our membership when registration opens.
